Frozen Pipes | What Should I Do?

If you have a frozen pipe, start by locating the supply shutoff valve for that pipe. For example, if your outdoor spigot (also known as a silcock) is frozen, check for a shutoff valve in the basement. Find the wall where the silcock is located and trace the water line as it enters the house. If your ceiling is unfinished, you may be able to follow the pipe and locate a shutoff valve.

Depending on the type of valve, you’ll either need to pull the handle (for a ball valve) or turn the knob (for a gate valve) to shut off the water supply. Not all pipes have a shut off valve so if you have a bad leak and can’t locate an isolated shut off valve then turning off the main water line might be your best option.
