We often speak to customers in Park Ridge, Illinois who believe that it is difficult to conserve water in their homes or businesses. We tell our customers that water conservation is not only easy, it saves them money and energy costs as well.

Here are some of the simple things anyone can do to conserve water and save energy:

  • Is your toilet making that noise that tells you it is time to change the toilet flapper and fill valve? Understand that toilets account for more than 40 percent of all household water use. Anything you can do to improve the efficiency will conserve water.
  • Check the temperature on your water heater. If it is above 120°F (or the medium setting) you are wasting energy.
  • Old shower heads waste water! Newer shower heads can save you nearly 8 gallons of water per minute.
  • Check your water meter to determine if there are leaks in your system. Look at the meter reading, for example, before you go to work. Then check it eight or 10 hours later when you return. If the meter has moved, you may have a leak.
  • How high is your water pressure? If it is above 60 PSI there is too much pressure in your system. Excessive pressure causes leaks.
  • Here’s the classic! If your faucet is dripping, understand that you can waste up to 150 gallons a day.
  • Buy a cheap, spring loaded timer and attach it to your outside faucet. This clever little trick will prevent over-watering in case you forget to shut off the sprinkler.
